Louisa's Life

Louisa Grace Prince

June 7, 1916 - November 4, 1998

She was born in Mt. Vernon, Washington to George Benjamin (Ben) Grace and Helen Hannay Grace. Her older siblings were Elizabeth (Betty Riley), Nancy (Gray) and William Hannay Grace.

This picture was taken by Edward Curtis in Seattle in 1918.

She was nurtured by a loving family and a childhood which combined Edwardian gentility and outdoor adventure. She attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia where she bonded with life-long friends and met the love of her life, Charlie.

After their marriage, August 7, 1937, they lived in his home town, Laurinburg, North Carolina. Elizabeth Leslie was born December 6, 1940, and Helen Hannay on September 28, 1942. World War II brought change into their lives. Charlie, an officer in the Navy, was stationed around the U.S. and then in the Philippines.

After Prairie (Charles Lempriere Prince, Jr.) was born May 7, 1950, the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona where Charlie worked as a cotton broker and he and Louisa raised their children. She guided Leslie into college and a beautiful life on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Helen to Harvard and a successful career in science, and Prairie into the world of art and rock 'n roll in San Francisco.

In 1974 Louisa and Charlie moved to San Francisco. They joined in the music and art scene and stayed involved with their family which now included grandchildren: Morgan, Francesca (Checkie), and Daniel Raimond, and Jessica and Anna Buchsbaum. Charlie died in 1983.

Louisa continued to live in San Francisco enjoying family and friends and some great trips to Europe, a realization of a life-long dream. For her 80th birthday her children took her to Italy to see the Sistine Chapel, restored to its original brilliance.

We say good-bye to her with tears and with incredible love and appreciation, Leslie, Helen, Prairie, Morgan, Checkie, Danny, Jessica and Anna and her ever-expanding circle of family and friends.
